The Germans achieved significant success on the Western Front in the initial phase of the 1914 war. They made a very deliberate maneuver across Belgium, whose territory, due to their very poor "security", was easily overrun on the almost defenseless French border and achieved great success. According to the plans of the Germans it was necessary to break the Allied positions on the Marne River, and then to continue its penetration into Paris, to occupy it and to dictate the terms of the truce.
However, from the very beginning of the fighting (September 5, 1914), the Allies organized a strong resistance and after a few days the Germans began to withdraw to their starting positions. Allied forces stabilized at the Marne and thus thwarted the German invasion intentions, taking the initiative into their own hands. The Battle of the Marne was crucial to the further flow of operations, and even to the outcome of World War I, the Temporary Reduction of the Western Front also resulted in Russia launching a major offensive on the Eastern Front to assist Western allies. The Russian troops invaded the territories of Austria-Hungary and Germany in a strong rush; the name forced the German General Staff to move part of their troops from the Western Front to the Eastern Front in order to save the Eastern frontiers and help Austria-Hungary.
On August 17, the Russians crossed the border of East Prussia with two of their armies and successfully penetrated enemy territory. As a result of the inconsistent command, the Germans took the initiative to go against the attack and expel the Russians from their territory, causing them great losses. At the end of 1914 he showed that the war had only just begun and would last for a long time.
The fiercest battles took place in 1916 on the Western Front. The famous battle is at Verdun in which both sides have suffered huge losses. The forces of the Entente stabilized, and in contrast to them the Central began to lose confidence and power. There were also naval battles, at Jitland.
