The author's purpose in the above passage was to show how Lancelot bid his lord goodnight and went out of the room to find Guinevere. She then brought him to her room. It could depict a secret action that they didn't want their Lord to find out. The author used the step by step organization of ideas to give emotion and depth to how it transpired as well as how it looked like they were up to something.
