Answered

Organic macromolecules called _______ are insoluble in water, are often found in biological membranes and other waterproof coverings, and have the ability to store energy for extended periods of time.

Answer :

The organic macromolecules are called Lipids. They are basically fat.

Lipids

Further Explanation:

Lipids are a long chain of hydrocarbons. Fat, oil and wax are some common examples of lipids. Water is a polar molecule whereas lipid is non-polar therefore lipids are insoluble in water (like dissolves like).

Lipids are biomolecules which are integral part of biological membranes. The structure of the cell membrane is called lipid bilayer because it is consists of two fat layers arranged in two sheets. The cell membranes are consists of a lipid bilayer which has a polar head and non-polar tail. The polar (hydrophilic) heads are oriented towards the aqueous region and the non-polar (hydrophobic) tail is oriented away from the aqueous region. The most common form of lipids present in biological membranes are phospholipids, glycolipids, and sterols. The phospholipids layer of the cell membrane is arranged in such a way that the hydrophilic region is exposed to water whereas the hydrophobic tail is hidden. The cell membrane acts as a selectively permeable membrane for the entry and exit of living matters.
