Review the passage.
Soon the men began to gather, surveying their own children, speaking of planting and rain, tractors and taxes. They stood together, away from the pile of stones in the corner, and their jokes were quiet and they smiled rather than laughed.
How does the passage create suspense?

Answer :

The passage doesn't give much information. It let's the reader wonder what is going on and what will happen next.
I think this is from The Lottery, which means that the answer is most likely b or d. But for a more deep and analytical answer say d because the lottery in general is a very unusual topic, but b also works.
