There were Democratic Republicans and Federalists. The Federalists were created largely by Alexander Hamilton, and the Democratic-Republicans were created mostly by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Hamilton was for a national bank and assuming states' debt and the Democratic-Republicans were strongly against Hamilton, therefore causing a split in opinions and almost forcing them to created separate government parties to let the people vote on which laws they would and wouldn't follow.
