The main themes in Frida Kahlo's work were, love, betrayal, pain, sickness, loss, her support for socialism, her mexican/mayan heritage and culture, family and friends, her sexuality and overall the very essence of herself - her own self portraits.

Her work is rich with symbolism and are deep reflections of her life and identity. Due to many severe health issues Frida spent a lot of time in her own company and therefore painted what she saw which was herself.
