They disagreed because North supported high tariffs.The region had most of the banking and other business as well. Tariffs caused imported goods to be more expensive than American manufacturers sell their products.The South opposed rising tariffs because tariffs made imported goods more expensive.And they didn't like it so they sold most of their cotton overseas,gained credit from those foreign buyers.Yet because of the tariff,those goods cost more.
