It is impossible to pinpoint a particular factor as being responsible for the collapse of the Soviet Union. However, there are several possible answers to this, as many factors played a role.

One factor could be the economy. As the prices of oil decreased, and inflation rose, the economy became more fragile, and a crisis began in the 1980s which weakened the regime.

Another factor was the beginning of glasnost and perestroika. With these policies, the government became more liberal, and this weakened the hold of the government in the media and society. In turn, these allowed Western ideas to become more popular and the regime to become weaker.

Finally, the Soviet Union invested heavily on the military, particularly as Reagan became president in the United States. This meant that as the economy weakened, the military took away resources that could have been used in social programs.
